Hi, the “girl” in the picture is me. I have a loving husband who has graciously spoiled me for almost 30 years and together we have six children, between the ages of 27 and 8. We have homeschooled for 20+ years and are still at it. I own and live in an amazing 1922 Craftsman home in Eureka. I enjoy anything farming, gardening, and do as much of that as I can with what I have. My other interests are in practical crafts and nutrition. Capable Women is my “playground”, where I share the things I like with others…
By the way we are looking for a bigger place if you know of one that fits the description below:
My dream place: anything bigger than an acre, out far enough to have chickens (including a rooster) and a couple goats, to 100+ acres close enough to town for Mike and John to commute to work and school within 20 minutes (all in Eureka). We would love to find a live in a caretaking/lease option position and exchange work (meals, housekeeping, gardening, transportation, etc.) for some land. I have included a family bio below. The Salmon Family
Mike and I (Georgia) have 6 children, two of which are still living at home.
We have home schooled them all. Our oldest is married and has graduated from Humboldt State with a BA in Child Development and currently working for HSU’s CD Lab. Our next child is married and has graduated from Humboldt State with a BS in Business Accounting, and is currently working for Jackson and Ekland, and is on her way to becoming a CPA. Our next child lives in Eureka and is currently working at Pierson’s. Next child is married and working for the CA Forestry Service in Salyer. The two youngest are still at home, homeschooling with Mom and Dad.
We have, until recently, “farmed” an acre which we owned in Santa Rosa, CA., that included a large organic garden, milk goats, sheep, chickens, and various other animals at various times, according to the children’s interests and our needs.
My family has a history of farming going back generations in South Dakota, as a result, I was raised in a small farm environment. I have read, studied, and practiced organic, sustainable agriculture principles for 30+ years and firmly believe in this way of life. Any property we own will be kept and managed according to these principles.
I have a Diet Counselors Certificate from Bauman College . My studies in nutrition included organic, fresh, whole, diverse, seasonal, etc… foods with an emphasis on “Eating for Health”.
I have worked in a small, privately owned Senior’s home and have also cared for Mike’s father who lived with us for 8 years until his move to a Vet’s home where he passed away.
I am an “at home Mom” and enjoy gardening/mini farming, cooking, canning, making cheese and yogurt, quilting, knitting, caring for animals … and most anything that comes along with homemaking on a farm.
Mike is semi-retired; he still does sports officiating, bookkeeping and income tax preparation on a limited basis. He is currently working one-on-one for the Humboldt County Office of Ed. in a Special Ed classroom. He was raised in SF so doesn’t know a lot about farm life but appreciates it and has always helped when and where he can; he’s not opposed to digging garden beds, feeding animals, or doing general chores.
Our children are well behaved, kind, and considerate and know how to work. They enjoy being around seniors and little people. They have all been consistently successful in their individual endeavors.
Thanks for reading this and again if you know of a place please let us know…
Sunny Skies to you,
Mike and Georgia Salmon

I enjoyed reading about your family and seeing pictures of your projects.
The picture of your family around the table is very sweet.
The love shows.
